Metamorphosis

Our butterflies finally completed their metamorphosis! Monday, Carson got home from school to find that the butterfly attached to the top of the jar had turned into a butterfly! It was like Christmas morning...we were all so excited! We decided that it would survive better outside rather in the jar that was full of moldy catepillar poo and leaves! Carson chose to release it onto one of our tomato plants. The next morning, Carson checked on it before he left for school and it was still there but was gone by the time he returned home that after noon. I have to say it was such a fun process to watch and see the different stages and colors!
Little butterfly waiting for his release. The other cocoon was no longer green anymore and was a deep black color.

Ready to go!

The colors were amazing!

The next day (Tuesday), butterfly #2 emerged and Carson released him too! I'm thinking that the boys are going to want to find more  next year and do this again!

  1. This just reminds me of the caterpillar on A Bugs Life. I'm a pretty little butterfly! Ooh candy corn!
