Egg Drop!

One of the things kids look forward to in 5th grade is the rocket launch. With distance learning at home still going on, the rocket launch was cancelled. In it's place, they had an egg drop yesterday. Each kid had to come up with a way to protect their raw egg from breaking when dropped from the top of the middle school gym. Travis and Christian brainstormed and decided to encase the egg in spray foam. Their first attempt to failed, when they put the egg in a water bottle and sprayed the foam in around it. They left it over night and the foam in the bottom of the bottle never really dried, but kind of disintegrated.

Plan B was to place some foam in a bowl, then the egg, and then cover it with more foam. This dried way better! They cut it open so they would have an entry point to check and make sure the egg was whole after they dropped it and then duct taped it back together.

For the egg drop, we had to drop off our eggs as we drove in to a teacher. We then parked in the parking lot and everyone was to stay in their cars so that we were practicing proper social distancing. The kids got to get out and watch their eggs drop and take them over to a teacher and inspect them.

Travis' egg ended up surviving the fall and he was one happy guy.
Waiting to get his inspected. Christian accompanied him with a knife to open the foam ball up.

Success!
After the egg drop, they announced some awards and were supposed to have a slide show, but it was kind of windy and the screen they were going to use was blowing all over the place, so they didn't end up showing it. Travis had a blast, and it was fun for him to be able to "see" some of his friends one more time, even if it was from a distance.

  1. We did this when I was in elementary and I loved it! Clever idea to protect your egg Travis!
