First deer hunt

November 1st marked opening day for deer on Grandpa Asay's land. A few weeks ago, uncle Daniel asked Carson if he wanted to shoot a deer for him since the price of an adult license had gone up and a youth one was quite a bit cheaper. It took Carson a few days to decided that he wanted to, but he was super excited when he finally made up his mind to do it. I thought it was a no-brainer...He buys a license and shoots the deer and Uncle Daniel takes care of the deer and uses the meat! We aren't game meat eaters, so we had no desire to have deer meat. Carson is hoping that he will get some jerky out of the deal, however!

Christian had taken him out to practice shooting the gun Daniel borrowed for him to use once before opening day. With school, practice until it's dark out and wrestling tournaments every weekend, Christian was afraid he wasn't going to be able to get anything. Christian talked to Carson's wrestling coach to find out what the policy was for missing school on a day of a meet and his coach said he should be just fine to wrestle if he missed half a day (they had a triangular in Cowley the same evening as opening day). With that, Christian let him skip school Thursday and they headed out to hunt. They came across some does at first and then they spotted a buck. The deer was not positioning himself in a way that Carson could get a good shot and was starting to take off, so Christian told Carson that if he wanted the deer he was going to have to shoot him now and that meant a butt shot. Carson took the shot and nailed him right in the rear. The buck took off, but they were able to find him, wounded, and then Carson finished him off. He said after his first shot his adrenaline was way high! He got himself a really nice 4x4! He had lots of fun showing off the pictures he took of it with his ipad when he got back to school!

Cason helped his dad gut it and then they took it to Grandpa Asay's shop and hung it up.
The first time I saw this picture, I was subbing, and it made me laugh out loud. I couldn't help but think it looked like the deer had turned his head and was telling Carson to stop!

Now, he's trying to talk his mom into letting him get a European mount of it. So far, it hasn't worked! I told him I would be ok with him just keeping the antlers!

  1. Good Job Carson! Jackson is looking forward to when he's 12 and gets to hunt...this year he just got to help spot and haul out Jason and his grandpa's deers.
