Weaning Calves

Yesterday, we went into Dry Head to help grandpa Asay wean his calves. Chrstian left about 6:30 to head up with Jared and Daniel. The boys and I left around 9 with grandma Asay and Kasi and her kids. It was a beautiful day up there. It was kind of cloudy part of the time, making it so it wasn't so hot. We got there just as they were loading up the trailers with calves. After they loaded as much as they could into the trailers, the trucks and trailers took off to unload at home and the rest of the group kicked the mommas back out over the hill and went to round up another group. On this round up, Carson got to ride Mike all by himself and Travis rode on a horse with Christian. After returning with another group and separating them, we cooked some burgers and had lunch. It was then back to work kicking out the mommas over the hill and gathering up the last bunch for the day. This time, Travis rode Mike while Christian led him and Carson rode one of Ray Snell's horses. After they brought the last group in, they sorted, loaded and then we cleaned up camp and headed home. A couple trucks had to go back in again that night to get a few more.

Travis thought it was funny that his bull kept sticking his head over the top of the truck at us.

Travis always tries to be like his dad. He got a pair of gloves for his birthday and wanted to use them just like dad does when he works cows.

Landon hated the fact that he didn't get to go on the horse when the group would leave. Christian made sure to give him rides on the horses when they were separating.

Britt laid on the 4-wheeler forever! We all thought he was going to fall asleep on there, but he never did.

Cows

We helped grandpa Asay last night bring a small group of cows home and separate the mommas from their babies. After, we had a pizza party at grandma's house...yum! The boys are counting down the days until we get to do it again in Dry Head this Saturday!

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday, Travis!

My dear Travis turned 5 yesterday! Because his birthday was on Labor Day weekend, we had a pretty low key party since a lot of our family was out of town. Grandpa and grandma Asay, Jared and Grandma Dorothy joined us for dinner and cake. Travis requested hot dogs (the adults had brauts) for dinner and wanted a camo party...he's a big fan of Duck Dynasty! After dinner, we opened presents and then had cake and ice cream.
The boys working on husking the the corn to have with our dinner before everyone came. It was a good distraction for him to pass the time until it was time to open presents.

Eating dinner.

The only thing he asked for was a camo sweatshirt that he saw at Cabelas. He was pretty excited about it and can't wait until it's cold enough to wear it.

He got a tool box with all sorts of fun things to in it.

Some safety glasses that came in his tool box.

Another hit was some wrestling head gear! Landon thought they were pretty cool.

Landon shared some of grandma Dorothy's dinner when she come.

Putting the head gear to good use!

Happy birthday!

Landon had a really hard time keeping his fingers out of the cake.

Christian helped make the camo cake. Travis was pretty impressed with our skills!
We are so thankful to have you in our family, Travis. You are full of energy, a hard worker, a big helper to your little brother. We love you lots!!

Picnic in Dry Head

Last night, we loaded up a picnic dinner, and picked up grandpa and grandma Asay and grandma Dorothy and headed into Dry Head for a picnic dinner and to pick some choke cherries. We drove passed the corrals where we will be heading next weekend to wean calves. When we arrived, we picked a bunch of choke cherries and then some went for a hike. We ended up picking enough to fill a Wilcoxins ice cream bucket and another gallon ice cream bucket full of choke cherries! Grandpa did a check of some of the cows there were close on their walk and thought they looked pretty good. Landon was in heaven with all the cows around! After picking cherries we had some fried chicken for dinner, ate some watermelon and then decided to head back since it was getting dark and cooling off. It was a fun little evening excursion with family!

Landon, Carson, grandpa Asay and Christian working on filling up the big ice cream bucket. The trees around were absolutely loaded with choke cherries.

Landon LOVED eating the ones he picked. There was good evidence of just how many he ate today in his diaper!

Landon was so proud of himself to be standing on this board because it made him a little taller and he could reach choke cherries that were up higher.

A look at some of the cows.

The boys were quite facinated with the bear poop that they found on their walk because it was full of seeds.

Carson got a multi-tool for his 5th birthday from some friends of ours in Nebraska. We haven't really ever let him use it until last night. He had  a blast using the little saw and the knife.

Enjoying some watermelon.
